West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science Learns about Black History Month through Art

Students in Ms Thompson’s art class engaged in a project this February to celebrate Black History Month through an assignment recognizing important black persons through their art. Students in the class celebrated Bisa Butler, an award-winning African American textile artist renown for her quilted portraits of people of African descent.

Ms Thompson’s class learns about diverse artists so that students can explore cultures and identities that aren’t their own. Students were given the opportunity to draw a portrait of an important person in Black History, create a background inspired by that person and write a paragraph to explain their historical significance.

This class was mentioned by local news media outlet ABC 13 On Your Side, and we couldn’t be more proud of everyone involved in this project for doing their part to celebrate Black History Month this year. For more information click here to watch the news-story, and follow us on social media.
