As the season changes we watch the snow melt away and the sun warm the bitter, cold air. It’s nearly spring! We pack away the snowshoes and sleds and head to the forest toward the sweet smell of our sugar maple trees. Students are already busy tapping for sap. Depending on the circumference of the trees, the fifth graders were able to determine how many taps are possible. The more taps, the more sap! It takes a lot of sap to create the sticky, sweet syrup we smother over our breakfast. In fact, It takes about 40 gallons of sap to create only 1 gallon of syrup! How much sap will we collect this year?
