Personal Curriculum

What is the Purpose of a Personal Curriculum?

The Personal Curriculum (PC) provides students with a flexible, individualized path toward earning their high school diploma. By modifying certain credit requirements or content expectations, the PC supports students in aligning their coursework with their Educational Development Plan (EDP) and unique academic needs. This option allows the school to adjust state graduation requirements while still ensuring students meet as many Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) expectations as possible. With an approved PC, students who complete their personalized requirements may earn a regular high school diploma.

A Personal Curriculum is ideal for students who want to take advanced or specialized coursework, need adjustments to meet MMC standards, or would benefit from a customized academic plan that supports their future goals.

Flexible Options & Eligibility for a Personal Curriculum

Students can earn additional credits in specific subject areas and apply them toward state requirements. A PC is ideal for those who want to pursue advanced or specialized content not available through regular electives or succeed in honors-level, accelerated, or advanced coursework in math, science, ELA, or world languages.

Mathematics Modification

A PC can adjust the Algebra 2 requirement for students who need flexibility to meet graduation standards while still demonstrating proficiency.

Students With an IEP

For students with an IEP, a PC allows modifications to the MMC that address how a disability affects access to or demonstration of proficiency. This option supports students who have not made sufficient progress despite interventions, accommodations, and support.

Transfer Students

Students transferring from out-of-state or from a nonpublic school after completing at least two years of high school coursework may qualify for limited modifications to help them meet graduation requirements.

How to Get Started

If you believe a Personal Curriculum may be right for you or your child, please reach out to your school counselor. They will guide you through the review process, determine eligibility, and help develop a plan that supports the student’s learning goals.
